Now that I've read this book I've realized that those concepts dovetail west "country art," "excavation," "environmental art," etc. and I'm actually quite interested in the latter as well. A lot of my favorite artists turn out to be working in this vein-- due east.g. Richard Serra, Andy Goldsworthy, Christo. I actually enjoyed reading about them in this book, in the context of the greater move that took place from the 60's onward. Earthworks & Beyond is one of the most lucid, accessible & comprehensive fine art history books I've ever read. (I guess I'yard comparing against the ones I read in higher, which were largely impenetrable.) There's too much interesting discussion within to summarize, but suffice to say if all art history texts were this expert, I'd take done art history equally a second major @ uni instead of cognitive scientific discipline. I kind of wish I had regardless. Would've been and then useful in my subsequent life in the outside world. I know, it'south never too late to acquire, but realistically, y'all demand that discipline of a class due west/ required papers and assignments to go through a serious text, fifty-fifty ane every bit readable as this. One affair I really like about this book is the way it'south laid out. Information technology has some pretty useful sections, in detail i) geographical index of all the art listed in the book, including directions on how to get at that place. very useful. immediately had me envisioning a roadtrip across the U.s.a., like in the movies where yous the journey visualized as a dotted line moving across a map... god it would be and so slap-up to caput off for a calendar month checking out monoliths in the desert and reclaimed quarries and whatnot. Haha I'1000 sure the kids would love information technology. "Dad I'm bored can I play Angry Birds? NO! Expect AT THE SUN TUNNEL DAMMIT!" 2) drove of "artist'south statements" / "manifestos" from a lot of the artists in the book-- ranging from predictably birdbrained to amusingly plainspoken, I found them really intriguing. bang-up idea to collect them all What else... at that place's a few guys whose fine art is Walking. I thought that was funny. I totally purchase it though. One guy takes walks and photographs his steps along the fashion , rearranging things. Some other just takes a single photo and labels information technology (e.m. "Seven Days Walking Through Snow Ending With Full Moon".) Yous really think near walking differently when y'all imagine yourself doing information technology equally art... what path do you trace out, what trace do yous leave? Finally, what sparked my interest in all this to brainstorm with was, some friends and I recently made the trip down to the Lightning Field, which, after the Screw Jetty, is the most iconic slice of country fine art in being. Really a magical experience. Wrote up some notes here. Have to confess I become a flake irritated how everybody upon hearing we went asks, "did you see lightning?" (information technology strikes me as uncomplicated minded and overly literal. just this is uncharitable on my function. I mean it is chosen the LIGHTNING field, for christ'south sake. if y'all hadn't already read some x page New Yorker article near it, why wouldn't yous retrieve it's almost lightning?)
